Methodology
Counts come from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service SNAP Retailer Locator dataset (August 2026 extract, 250,445 records). Chain totals are matched by store name against 75 known chain patterns; a location counts toward a chain only if it appears in the USDA file as SNAP-authorized. Store types are inferred from store names, so type shares are estimates; state and chain counts are direct record counts. Authorization is per location — a chain appearing here doesn't mean every location of that chain is authorized. Data refreshes when USDA updates the source file; the "as of" date above reflects our current extract.
